About this collection

Soapstone Chess Sets

Checkmate, but make it art.

Every set in our soapstone chess collection is hand-carved by artisans in Kisii, Kenya, from the polished stone board to all 32 pieces. The kings, queens and knights are shaped with tribal motifs and ancestral figures, so no two handmade chess sets are ever quite the same.

Play a proper game on it, then leave it out on the coffee table, because a hand-carved African chess set this good deserves to be seen. It makes a thoughtful, one-of-a-kind gift for him, for chess lovers and for collectors of African art.

  • 100% hand-carved Kisii soapstone
  • 32 carved chess pieces and a stone chess board
  • Board approx. 46 x 46 cm (sizes vary slightly as each set is handmade)
  • Ethically sourced from Kenyan artisans

Carved in Kenya, sold by Nathez Out of Africa in Stirling, Scotland, with delivery across the UK and worldwide.
