Kenyan Soapstone Carvings
Kenyan Soapstone Carvings
Every piece in this collection is carved by hand by the Tabaka Chigware Self Help Group, a youth group of artisans in Kisii, western Kenya. Kisii is known for its soft, creamy soapstone, and carving it is a skill passed down through families.
Made by hand, one piece at a time
Each carving starts as a rough block of stone. The artisans shape it with simple hand tools, smooth it by hand and finish it with colour or etched patterns. No two pieces come out exactly alike, so small variations in tone, grain and detail are part of the charm.
Why it matters
When you buy from this collection, you're supporting young makers in Kisii to earn a living from their craft and keep a local tradition going.
